A ROOM WITH A VIEW

Our challenge to our photographers from all walks of life was to document their time at home during the Circuit Breaker, sharing the particular view from their habitat. For 19 days, they were to take a square photo from the same spot at four different times of the day, using only their mobile phones — giving us a glimpse into the worlds and spaces they live in, shrunken but perhaps simultaneously enlarged.

SPACING OUT David Chan

David is a traveller, a photographer, a cook, a dragon boater, a reader, a racer, a friend, a son, a brother, a music lover, a party animal, an animal lover, and above all, a person who likes to live. Professionally, he is a commercial photography producer.

David is an avid Instagrammer — it’s one way for him to connect with the rest of the world, and have the world connect with him visually. In the world of COVID-19 where we have to disconnect with the world physically, his home is his sanctuary and Instagram is his virtual escape.

When he looks out of his window, the real world that he sees is at a standstill — nothing moves except for time and nature. The sky changes in hues, and bubbles and thunders. The birds become more daring and grass grows freely. He stares and spaces out.

AN EVER-CHANGING LANDSCAPE Ryan loh

Ryan is a still-life photographer based in Singapore. He enjoys observing the banal things of everyday life and exploring the topics of food and spaces.

At the heart of Ryan’s 7-person household sits a 1-metre round table. It reflects the daily eating and living habits of Ryan’s family. Besides meals, this table also holds the snacks they love and the bread for tomorrow’s breakfast. They put their belongings and letters on the table as well, so they won’t be forgotten.

This unprecedented global halt has led to drastic shifts, both social and economic, all over the world. A shift has also taken place within the home. During this period, dining in has become the new normal, thus turning this table into an ever-changing landscape

INSIDE THE BOX Isabelle Lim

During the initial days of the circuit breaker, Isabelle turned to binge-watching dramas on Netflix to help cope with increasing chaos, loss of income and cancelled photography assignments. It helped take her mind off worrying. This project was an opportunity for her voice to be heard. It allowed her to explore, on a deeper level, the circuit breaker experience within four walls.

SKIES ARE MADE OUT OF BOREDOM Jet Ho

Before COVID-19, Jet, an aspiring 31-year-old photographer, viewed the world as his working playground. Then, when the virus struck, his world narrowed down to his small room in Bishan, where he has lived all his life. To combat boredom, he installed dramatic skies and stormy weather in his photos during the post-production process. The view from his HBD flat had been great, but adding some gloomy colours and textures reflected, in a fun way, what he had been feeling on the inside.

LAUNDRY BASKET Rex Teo

Rex Teo is a photographer based in Singapore. He believes in translating emotions into visuals. The laundry basket shares the space he lives in. It is a reflection of a day's worth of activities. Although these activities are now minimal, they include exercising, housekeeping, grocery runs, and even idling. The acts of adding and removing items from the laundry basket are reminiscent of our lifestyle during the pandemic: life goes on even when the world outside is at a standstill.
