FAKE NEWS

From the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the global spread of the virus has been mirrored by a global “infodemic” of false information and fake news spreading across new media platforms. We put out a call for a film that would illustrate the impact of unreliable information, stereotypes, prejudice, discrimination, and hate crimes, without losing sight of the almost comedic surreality of the fake news phenomenon.

Articulous

Articulous is an arts collective that was exclusively mobilised in response to the #NEVERBEFORESG initiative. Addressing current global issues through a tongue-in-cheek and satirical approach, Articulous questions media content legitimacy and intention as this is shared to the masses.

In their exploration, the collective believes that the news received today consists of confirmation bias, political polarisation and misguiding information, but is often misinterpreted as genuine. With the different social media platforms available today and their ease of outreach, the spread of false information or ‘fake news’ is becoming more prevalent.

Particularly in this current COVID-19 pandemic, with most parts of the world facing lockdowns and practising social distancing measures, the ease of access to social media becomes the default platform of respite and escape for many. Through the series of video artworks created, Articulous challenges the viewers to re-examine and question the information that is presented by the media. Is what we see is the truth, or is it a tool of make belief?
