THE ART OF PPE
Max Tan
Max Tan is the fashion designer whose label MAX.TAN was founded in 2010.
In this digital age, we’ve grown used to the customisation of our items. From our phones to the way to dress, expressing our unique personality has never been easier. Max imagines PPE suits to be walking works of digitally printed art that tell of a person and their personality.
His take on the PPE suit reflects his love of the monochromatic colour scheme, inspired by the abstract and muddled calligraphy works of Nanyang artist Lim Tze Peng. While Lim’s calligraphic inspiration and choice of medium (Chinese ink) are traditional, his techniques are modern, not steeped in the past. The art of calligraphy is inspected and explored in its entirety: respecting negative space; paying attention to the movement and tension of brush strokes; a sharp monochromatic palette; and soft feathered edges, with a harmonious and graphic result.
