SIX SQUARE METERS AND BEYOND
Randy Chan and Kenneth Chen, Zarch Collaboratives
Zarch Collaboratives is an award-winning, multi-disciplinary architecture firm helmed by Principal Architect Randy Chan.
Six Square Meters And Beyond, co-created by Randy and Architectural Designer Kenneth Chen, was born out of the architects’ professional response to the COVID-19 pandemic, given that the construction industry was one of the first industries to experience the fallout of COVID-19 as it took its toll on the migrant worker community.
Randy and Kenneth thought about how they could reframe views on migrant workers, juggling the ideas of duty and gratitude. While architects are conscientious about space, this piece suggests using efficiency and productivity as means to provide humanitarian aid. Singapore, too, was once a migrant society, and it is poignant that migrant workers have similarly sacrificed much in coming to our shores to seek a better life for their families. As much as it is an individual story, this is also a community story.
